Once a buyer downloads your PDF, they can copy it. You can limit access to the download link and mark the file with details that help identify its order. Together, these controls can discourage sharing and help you trace a leaked copy if its identifying marks survive.
This guide covers the two ways to deliver PDFs from Shopify, the protections that make a real difference, how to decide what to pay for, and a checklist to run before you launch.
Two ways to deliver PDFs from Shopify
To deliver PDFs automatically after payment, use an app that attaches files to your Shopify products and sends buyers download links.
Shopify's free Digital Products app
Shopify's own app (long known as Digital Downloads) is free and covers the basics. You attach files to a product variant, and after payment the customer gets an email with a link to a download page. You can also add a block that shows the links on the Thank you and Order status pages.
According to Shopify's help center, each variant can hold up to 50 files with a combined size of 5 GB, and a file added from the product page can be up to 500 MB. Access is set per variant and starts at Unlimited, which you can change to a set number of downloads per customer.
That can be enough if you only need file delivery. Shopify's listing and help page don't describe PDF stamping, so the delivered file has no buyer-specific mark to help trace a leak. See the Shopify Digital Downloads comparison for sources and limits.
A dedicated digital delivery app
Other delivery apps can add expiry dates, detailed download logs and stamps with the buyer's details. Shopify's free app already supports download limits and deactivating an order's links. Compare the extra controls you need before choosing an app.
Imprint is one of these apps. Its Free plan already includes per-customer links, download limits and expiry dates, and a stamp of each buyer's email on their PDFs. If you're weighing it against other apps, the comparison pages put them side by side.
What actually reduces sharing
Each of these closes a different gap, so they work best together.
Give every buyer their own link
When every customer gets the same download link, the link works for anyone who gets hold of it. Once it's posted in a forum, the only way to stop it is to break it for every paying customer too.
With a link per customer, a shared link only exposes one order, and you can shut off that one order. Imprint creates unique download links for every order. Restrict Downloads on the order page stops them working and shows the customer a message you can write yourself, and refunds and cancellations in Shopify switch the links off for you.
Limit downloads and set an expiry date
A download limit stops one link from turning into a hundred copies. An expiry date stops a forwarded link from working forever.
Allow for buyers who download on several devices or need a replacement copy. New Imprint stores start at 7 days and 3 downloads; the Generous preset is 30 days and 5 downloads. Choose limits that match the access you promise on your product page. A workbook that buyers return to all year may need a longer expiry. See Download Settings for the details.
Tight limits mean some support emails. In Imprint you can reset a customer's download count or extend their expiry from the order page, and on Basic and up you can add the download links to the Order status page, so buyers can find their files without digging through their inbox. See Display links on checkout.
Stamp the buyer's details on every page
A stamp with the buyer's name or email can discourage casual sharing. If that stamp survives on a leaked copy, it also gives you a way to look up the customer or order.
Imprint stamps each PDF at the moment it's downloaded, so every customer's copy is different. On the Free plan, the stamp is the customer's email, centered at the bottom of the page in small gray text. On paid plans you write your own text with the customer's name, order number, company or a field they filled in at checkout, and choose the position, size, color and opacity.
The styling matters less than three decisions:
- Every page or just the first. A first-page stamp disappears when someone deletes the first page. Stamp every page unless your layout can't take it.
- What the stamp shows. An email address or name exposes customer details if the file leaks. A copy code lets you look up the download without printing those details on the page.
- Where it sits. A stamp alone in an empty margin is easy to crop off. One placed where cropping would cut into your content is harder to remove. Check it on your own file with Preview PDF Stamp before you sell.
Then tell buyers about it. A line on the product page such as "Each copy is personalized with the buyer's name" starts working before anyone opens the file. The Watermark Settings docs list every variable you can stamp.
Add a copy code to the stamp
A copy code is a short code unique to one download, like IMP-7K3QZ9M2PXP. If it survives in a leaked file, you can look up the exact download. The code itself doesn't display the customer's name or email.
In Imprint, copy tracking is included from the Basic plan up. Every order also gets a licence code, and the order page has a Download Log listing each download with its time, country, device and copy code. If one link is being downloaded from several countries, the log shows it. Find Order by Code opens the order behind any code you find. See Copy Tracking.
Hide a mark for when the stamp gets removed
A determined leaker will crop or edit the visible stamp. Hidden marks are the backup: a code placed in the file where the leaker is unlikely to look. On the Premium plan, Imprint's tracing marks put the copy code in faint micro-text in the margin of every page and in the file's document properties. An optional small QR code in a corner survives printing and scanning, as long as it's still visible on the page.
No mark is impossible to remove. The guide to visible vs invisible PDF watermarks covers how each kind gets defeated and which to use for your type of product.
What helps less than you'd expect
PDF passwords. An open password gets shared along with the file. A permissions password, the kind that blocks printing or copying, only works when the reader app respects it, and plenty of tools don't. Both get in the way of paying customers who want to print your pattern or open the file on their tablet.
DRM readers and view-only portals. Keeping the file inside a special app or a browser viewer stops simple copying. It also means buyers can't open the file in their own apps, print it the way they want, or keep it. For ebooks, patterns and planners, that freedom is often why people buy a PDF in the first place, and a screenshot or a phone camera still gets around the lock.
Choosing what to pay for
Base the decision on what you'd want to do if a copy of your file turned up online tomorrow.
- Limit access and add an email stamp. Imprint's Free plan covers per-customer links, download limits, expiry dates and PDF stamping with the buyer's email. It allows 20 products, 500 MB of storage, one file per product and files up to 100 MB. Download emails include "Digital downloads powered by Imprint".
- Add copy codes and a download log. Basic ($8.99 a month, or $89.90 a year) adds your own stamp text, copy codes, the Download Log and Find Order by Code. It also supports several files per product, checkout downloads and your own email server, and removes Imprint's branding.
- Add hidden marks and file analysis. Premium ($18.99 a month, or $189.90 a year) adds tracing marks, leak tracing and takedown notice drafts, plus unlimited products, storage and file size. Hidden marks can help trace a copy after its visible stamp is removed, but they can be removed too.
If your PDFs sell for $10 or more, Basic costs less each month than a single sale. Both paid plans come with a 14-day free trial. Imprint records a copy code for every download even on the Free plan, so if you upgrade later, your Download Log already shows your earlier downloads. See Pricing & Plans for the full comparison.
Launch checklist
Work through this before your first real sale.
- Mark the product as digital. In Shopify, uncheck This is a physical product so checkout doesn't ask for shipping.
- Connect the product and upload your PDF in your delivery app. Imprint's quick start has four steps.
- Preview the stamp on your real file. Make sure it doesn't cover anything important and is still readable when printed.
- Stamp every page, unless your layout can't take it.
- Add a copy code to the stamp (Basic and up). In Imprint, switch on Always append the copy code, or put
{copy_id}in your template where you want it. - Turn on tracing marks and the QR code (Premium), in a corner your pages usually leave empty.
- Set download limits and an expiry date for the store, with longer ones for products buyers come back to.
- Show the downloads at checkout (Basic and up). Add the download block to both the Thank you page and the Order status page.
- Send emails from your own address, if you can, and send a test email to an address outside your domain, such as a Gmail account.
- Say on the product page that each copy is personalized.
- Place a test order. Download the file, check the stamp on several pages, and try the link more times than your limit allows.
- Know what you'll do about a leak. Read the two guides below now, so you aren't learning the steps under pressure.
If a copy gets out anyway
If a copy leaks, save the evidence and look for identifying marks. Check any match before restricting an order's downloads. You can ask the site to remove an infringing copy even if you can't trace it to a buyer.
