Imprint Files vs Shopify Digital Downloads

Shopify Digital Products costs nothing, comes from Shopify and has been on the App Store since 2012. Each variant can hold up to 50 files and 5 GB, and Shopify says there is no bandwidth limit for downloads. That’s more room than the Imprint Files Free plan, with its 20 products and 500 MB. If your files don’t need a watermark, the free app is a sensible place to start.

Neither the listing nor Shopify’s help page mentions watermarking or stamping. Imprint Files stamps each PDF as it downloads. On Free, the buyer’s email goes at the bottom of each page. On Basic you write the stamp, for example Licensed to {name} - {email} - Order {order_number}, and pick its position, size, colour and opacity. Shopify’s app has no access limit by default. You can set a “Times per customer” limit per variant, and the help page doesn’t describe links that expire. Imprint Files sets a download limit (1 to 100) and an expiry (1 to 365 days) for the store or per product. You can reset or extend them for one order, and a full refund turns the order’s links off. Shopify’s listing and help page don’t describe a way to trace a shared file. On Imprint Files Basic, every download gets a copy code, and the order page logs it with the time, country and device. Type a code from a leaked file into Find Order by Code and the order opens.

On Premium, tracing marks hide the code inside every page, with an optional QR code, giving you another way to trace a copy if its visible stamp is removed. Upload the copy to look for a matching order and download, then draft a DMCA or EU Digital Services Act notice. Tracing depends on surviving clues and doesn’t prove who shared the file.
