Secure digital downloads for Shopify, with a unique link for every buyer

Imprint Files emails each customer their own download link as soon as they pay. You set its expiry date and download limit. Refunds revoke access to the refunded files, and downloads stream from cloud storage without exposing the storage address.

Free plan available. 14-day free trial on Basic and Premium.

Why a shared download link is a problem

A permanent link can keep delivering your file after someone forwards it or posts it publicly. Revoking a link used by every buyer also cuts off paying customers.

Imprint gives every customer their own link for every file they buy. Each link has its own expiry date and download count, you can see how much it has been used, and you can switch it off from the order page at any time.

Expiry dates and download limits

Store-wide defaults

All plans

On the Download Settings page, set how many days a link stays active after purchase (1 to 365) and how many times each file can be downloaded (1 to 100). New stores start at 7 days and 3 downloads. Three presets fill in the form for you: Standard (7 days, 3 downloads), Generous (30 days, 5 downloads) and Extended (1 year, 10 downloads).

Limits per product

All plans

Any product can override the store defaults: 365 days for a year-long course, or 2 days for a flash sale. Leave its fields empty and it follows the store settings.

New rules for past orders

Raised your limit from 3 to 5? Apply to Existing Orders updates every link your customers already have to your saved limits, with product-specific limits still taking precedence. Expiry is recalculated from the original purchase date. Counts aren’t reset: a customer who used 3 downloads has 2 left under a new limit of 5.

What else protects each download

All plans

A unique link per customer

Every link belongs to one order and counts against that order’s limit. Email link scanners and download managers that only check a link don’t use up a download.

All plans

Streamed from cloud storage

Files are stored on Cloudflare R2 and streamed to your customer’s browser, so the link never shows where the file lives.

All plans

Refunds and cancellations

A full refund in Shopify invalidates every link in the order. A partial refund revokes only the refunded files. A cancelled order has all its downloads restricted.

All plans

Restrict an order yourself

Suspect a customer is sharing? Restrict Downloads on the order page stops their links right away and shows them a message you can write.

How delivery works

  1. Connect a product and upload the file

Pick a Shopify product in Imprint and drag in your file. Basic and Premium allow several files per product.

  2. Your customer pays

Shopify tells Imprint about the paid order, and Imprint creates a unique, time-limited link for every file in it.

  3. The links arrive

The download email goes out right away, with a Download button for every file, the expiry date and the downloads left. On Basic and Premium, they can also appear on your Thank You and Order Status pages.

  4. Digital items are marked fulfilled

Once the links are delivered, Imprint marks the order’s digital items as fulfilled in Shopify, without a shipping email to the customer. Physical items are left for you to ship.

What you can sell

  • PDFs and other documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ebooks (EPUB, MOBI)
  • Images and design files (PSD, AI, Figma, Sketch)
  • Videos (MP4, MOV) and audio (MP3, WAV)
  • ZIP and other archives
  • Fonts and 3D models

If a file type isn’t accepted, put it in a ZIP archive and upload that. PDFs can also be stamped with the buyer’s details as they download.

What your customer sees

A download email in their language

All plans

The email, the download pages and messages like an expired link all use the language they shopped in: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Greek, Hungarian, Polish or Turkish. Other languages fall back to your Shopify admin’s language, then English.

Sent from your own address

Basic +

Connect your own SMTP server, such as Gmail, Outlook or SendGrid, and the email comes from an address like [email protected]. Basic also removes the “Digital downloads powered by Imprint” line.

Downloads on the Thank You and Order Status pages

Basic +

Add the Digital Files block in Shopify’s checkout editor, and your customer gets a Your Downloads list on the Thank You page the moment they pay. On the Order Status page, they can come back from their account later to download again.

What you see in the admin

Every order page lists each file with its downloads used and remaining, whether the link is Active, Expired or marked Limit Reached, when it was last downloaded and when it expires. Four buttons cover the usual support emails:

  • Resend Email sends the same links again, without resetting the counts.
  • Reset Downloads sets every file’s download count back to zero.
  • Extend Expiry makes every link valid for another 7 days from today.
  • Restrict Downloads stops every link in the order until you lift it.

On Basic and Premium, the Download Log adds the time, country and device of each download, so you can spot a link that’s being passed around.

Secure download questions

Can customers share their download link?

They can forward it, but it's tied to their order and its download limit. Shared with ten people at a limit of 5, it stops working after the fifth download, and Restrict Downloads on the order page switches it off sooner.

What happens when a link expires?

It stops working, and your customer sees a message in their language. If they ask for more time, click Extend Expiry on the order page to make every link valid for another 7 days.

Can I set different limits for different products?

Yes. Each product has its own Download expiry and Maximum downloads fields. Fill them in to override the store defaults, or leave them empty to follow the defaults.

How large can my files be?

Up to 100 MB per file on Free, 1 GB on Basic, and no limit on Premium, with 500 MB, 5 GB and unlimited storage. Files upload straight from your browser to cloud storage, so large videos and archives are fine.

Do I have to fulfill digital orders by hand?

No. Once the download links are delivered, Imprint marks the order’s digital items as fulfilled in Shopify and leaves physical items for you. You can switch this off under Settings → Orders.
