# Public Previews (/docs/public-previews)

Shoppers are more likely to buy a PDF when they can see what's inside. A **public preview** is a short PDF made from the first pages of your file, with a large, pale overlay text such as **PREVIEW** across every page. Anyone with its link can open it, so you can add a button to your product page or share the link wherever you promote the product.

Public previews are available on every plan, including Free.

## Setting Up a Preview [#setting-up-a-preview]

1. Open the product from the **Products** page and click **Preview PDF Stamp** next to its PDF. The button appears once the product is saved.
2. Find the **Public preview** section in the right-hand column.
3. Choose your settings (see below) and click **Generate preview**.

Imprint builds the preview in the background. It usually takes a few seconds, and the section shows **Generating the preview...** until it's ready. Then it shows the preview's link.

### Preview Settings [#preview-settings]

- **Pages:** how many of the first pages to include, from **1 to 10**.
- **Overlay text:** drawn large and pale across every page. Up to 40 characters, using letters without accents, digits and basic punctuation.
- **Add a closing page:** ends the preview with an extra page that says **Get the full version at**, followed by a link to the product on your store.

New previews start with **3 pages** and the overlay text **PREVIEW**. On Basic and Premium, you can change these starting values under **Settings → Samples**, in the **New previews** section.

To change a preview later, edit its settings and click **Update preview**. Its link stays the same.

### The Closing Page and Your Plan [#the-closing-page-and-your-plan]

- **Free:** every preview ends with the closing page, which also says **Powered by Imprint**.
- **Basic and Premium:** the closing page is optional, and it never mentions Imprint.

The closing page is written in the language you use Imprint in. If its font can't write that language (Greek and Japanese, for example), it's written in English.

## Sharing the Preview [#sharing-the-preview]

Once the preview is ready, the section shows:

- **Preview link:** the preview PDF's address. Click **Copy link** to copy it, or **Open** to view the preview.
- **Button code:** the code of a **Read a free preview** button that opens the link. Click **Copy code** to copy it.

Paste the button code into the product's description in Shopify, using the description editor's HTML view, or into a **Custom Liquid** block on your theme's product page. You can share the link itself anywhere else, for example in emails, social media posts or ads.

You don't need to open the PDF's page every time you want the link. The product's page in Imprint has a **Previews and samples** card that lists each PDF's preview link, with buttons to copy the link or the button code.

## What's in a Preview [#whats-in-a-preview]

- Only the pages you chose, plus the closing page if there is one.
- No customer details and no tracing marks. A preview isn't anyone's copy, so it carries only the overlay text.
- Previews don't count toward your storage.

Imprint rebuilds the preview by itself when a plan change adds or removes the **Powered by Imprint** closing page.

If you remove the PDF from the product, its preview is deleted with it and the link stops working. A PDF you upload in its place needs a preview of its own, with a new link.

---

## Turning a Preview Off [#turning-a-preview-off]

Click **Turn off**. The link stops working right away.

<Callout type="warn">
**Copies already opened can stay visible for a while.** Browsers and caches that already opened the link can keep showing the preview for up to an hour after you turn it off.
</Callout>

If a [free sample](/docs/free-samples) uses the preview's pages, the button says **Turn off public link** instead. The public link stops working, and the free sample keeps using the pages. You can make them public again with **Share publicly too**.
